Set in a fictional college in the eighties, the book follows a group of privileged students studying the Classics and the mysterious events that unfold within their closed and exclusive setting. The story is more of a "whydunit" than a traditional whodunit, as the identity of the culprit is revealed early on, but the motive remains mysterious. The book is praised for its sweeping romanticism, its vivid portrayal of college life in the eighties, and its complex characters. The narrator, Richard, and his love of the picturesque, provide a captivating perspective, while Henry, who may or may not be a psychopathic killer, adds an element of suspense. However, the most chilling character is Julian Morrow, the enigmatic professor who holds the answers to the secrets that unfold. Donna Tartt's writing is praised for being both skillful and compelling, and her ability to create a captivating story in a closed college setting is lauded. Although it took her eight years to write this book, it is worth the wait.
