During the creation of "Seventeen Seconds", the band's inspiration was at an all-time high. Robert Smith, the frontman and creative force behind The Cure, wrote the lyrics and music for most of the record during just two occasions. The majority of the music was composed by Smith at his parents' home, using a Hammond organ with a built-in tape recorder. Producer Mike Hedges, interviewed in 2004, recalls that there were no demo tracks for this album.
The band members would typically play the tracks in the studio before laying down a backing track, which would then be adorned with various overdubs. It was a collaborative effort that resulted in a hauntingly beautiful collection of songs. "Seventeen Seconds" marked a significant milestone for The Cure, not only with the addition of bass guitarist Simon Gallup and keyboardist Matthieu Hartley but also with their new ethereal sound. Gallup replaced Michael Dempsey, allowing Smith to achieve the simpler basslines that he desired, both musically and personally.
Hartley's synth work brought a fresh dimension to the band's sound, despite occasional clashes with Smith over complexity.
